A proud graduate of Williamsburg County Training School, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in secondary education, curriculum, and instruction from the University of South Carolina, a Master of Arts in Music Education from Tennessee State University, and a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from South Carolina State University (Go Bulldogs!). His entire career was devoted to education, having served as a teacher, principal, district-level administrator, and university professor.

Marion shared his vast knowledge in authoring three books: Maximizing Student Learning: Feel the Magic, How to Become Smart and Good, and Text Dependent Analysis: Made Simple Yet Effective.

He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, the renowned Marching 101 Band (Go Bulldogs!), and the "Soul Agents." An Army veteran, he served his country with distinction, and he was honorably discharged.

Marion was a charter member of the I. DeQuincey Newman United Methodist Church. A devoted servant, he cherished every opportunity to share the Word. He was a Lay Speaker, the Minister of Music, a Sunday School teacher, a Bible study leader, a choir director, a soloist, a pianist, and the church organist. Since the inception of the church, Dr. Newman has played the piano or organ every Sunday without fail.
